CompositesWorld recently visited Composite Advantage LLC (Dayton, Ohio, USA) to see its facilities. The company provides engineered fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) products, including bridge decks, pedestrian bridges, cantilevered walkways, railway platforms, and waterfront structures such as fender protection systems, piles and naval ship dividers.
CW has reported on the Composite Advantage project for some time, and I am very happy to have the opportunity to overhaul the facility. At the time of the visit, the company was developing FRP bridge decks for a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project that will create more than 30 miles of shared paths along Lake Tahoe. The bridge panels made by Composite Advantage will be shared along Lake Tahoe along Nevada Interstate 28.
Scott Reeve, President and CEO of Composite Advantage, believes that a solution that can be installed on uneven rocky terrain is needed. In addition, Interstate 28 in Nevada is the only access to a specific section of the Lake Tahoe coastline, so closing the concrete road is not a good option-the right solution requires quick installation.

The FRP bridge deck product of Composite Composite was selected to complete this work. During the factory tour, CW peeped into some panels in the production process.
The cross section of the Composite Advantage bridge deck shows the various parts of the lightweight core material, which are wrapped in fiberglass fabric and then injected with vinyl ester to form part of the FRP deck.
In addition to the bridge deck, Reeve also explained the company’s work on the waterfront structure. Composite Advantage’s products include composite piles, fender systems and camels (bumpers that protect naval ships).
“Our piling is a’fence post’ that supports Wales or guardrails in a mudguard system,” Reeve explained.
He pointed out that the piling system is an area where FRP can play a huge role, not only in terms of weight reduction and corrosion resistance, but also in terms of cost.
Reeve said: “We can make piles with a high strength-to-weight ratio, which means we can make structurally very effective piles.” In the latest project in Cape May Peninsula, New Jersey, the company’s FiberPILE FRP system can The number of piles required for the structure is reduced by half, thereby saving costs. Composite Advantage used 53 composite piles to meet the necessary 250 kip feet of energy to absorb the impact load, eventually replacing 141 original wooden piles.
