Thomas Technik + Innovation (TTI, Bremen, Germany, 5/P80) demonstrated manufacturing technology that can produce large enough quantities of affordable carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts for the mainstream automotive industry. There is a CFRP bumper on TTI’s booth and “Car Planet”, and 100,000 can be manufactured annually using the company’s Radius-Pultrusion process. TTI sales engineer Sebastian Mehrtens explained: “In a normal pultrusion process, you have a fixed mold, two grippers or a caterpillar pull the fiber through Heated mold. In the radius pultrusion process, we move the mold. ”
The mold clamps the incoming resin-impregnated carbon fiber at the upstream end of the production line, and then moves downstream through the bend to solidify the profile as it advances to the fixed clamp. When pushing the cured profile to the automatic cutting saw, the clamp remains open and only closes when the mold arrives. When the mold is opened and returned upstream to tighten and cure the next bending material, the paper teeth fix the cured profile in place.
TTI also said that it is licensing the Radius-Pultrusion technology to others. For example, the bumper displayed at JEC World 2019 is a general-purpose part manufactured by TTI customer Shape Corp. It includes thermosetting resin reinforced with carbon fiber yarn and roving.
TTI says the process can be carried out with minimal manual intervention. It is said that this is to ensure that the final parts can be produced in the batch and consistency required by the automotive industry. In addition, TTI said, a Radius-Pultrusion production line can be used to manufacture different profiles.
